What are IMAP and POP in the Android Gmail app?

Instead of utilizing Exchange ActiveSync, you can manually set up your account and use IMAP or POP to receive and send emails.

This implies that your contacts and calendar will not sync with your phone—only your email will.

Here are the definitions of IMAP and POP, in case you are not familiar with them.

IMAP

You may access your email via IMAP from any location and on any device of your choosing. For instance, your computer does not truly download or keep a message when you read it via IMAP.

You are actually reading it straight out of the email service instead.

As a result, you may access your email on any device, anywhere on the globe. A message will only be downloaded by IMAP if you choose it and click on it.

Moreover, you may check your email much faster than you could with POP because attachments are not downloaded automatically.

Pop

POP, in contrast, makes direct contact with your email provider and retrieves all of your recent messages from it. They are removed from the email service once they have completed downloading to your Mac or PC.

This implies that you can only access the email on the same computer once it has been downloaded to your device. You will not be able to access the emails you previously downloaded if you try to enter your account from a different device.

  • Moreover, sent mail is kept locally on your Mac or PC rather than on the email server. Remember that you can get POP-compatible email accounts from a lot of ISPs.
