Seven Easy Steps to Increase Your Productivity at Home

Working remotely or from home is becoming more and more common. You will learn seven strategies from this post to increase your productivity when working from home.

Seven Strategies for Increasing Productivity at Home

When working from home, are you having trouble achieving the same level of productivity as you do in your usual workspace? You are not by yourself. Like you, I have been working remotely for more than two years.

At first, working from home instead of a traditional 9 to 5 job sounds like a great idea. That is until you realize how badly you are performing. Many of those who were made to work from home as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic are growing tired of this.

Your concerns are legitimate. Tons of researchers, such as Stanford professor Nicholas Bloom, have found that working from home can significantly increase your productivity. It is crucial to understand how to utilize your newly found comfort because of this.

Based on my own experience and what I have learned from others, here are 7 suggestions for living a better and more productive life when working remotely.

1. Get a good start to the day.

productivity

Your morning ritual determines the course of your day. I have witnessed individuals become less productive when they do not have a routine morning routine to begin their workday. If you work while still in your jammies, without even getting out of bed, I promise you will not be productive.

Every day should begin as if you are leaving for the office when you get up. After taking a shower and making your bed, change into appropriate attire and eat a hearty breakfast. This kind of preparation also makes it possible for you to immediately participate in video conferences with your coworkers.

2. Do not forget to divide your work.

productivity

Setting boundaries between my home and professional lives was something I struggled with early in my remote work career. Because it is easy to become sidetracked by your surroundings when you are at home, you should keep work and other hobbies apart.

Putting your work equipment in the right place is a terrific starting point. Try to find a space dedicated to you for your computer and other work equipment. By doing this, you distance yourself from potential distractions like roommates or family. You can avoid embarrassing accidents like the famous BBC interview incident with Professor Robert Kelly.

You have the entire room to yourself, but there are still a lot of potential distractions. I want to provide you some pointers on how to get rid of these distractions so you may concentrate entirely on your work.

  • Put on noise-cancelling headphones. Many find that listening to relaxing music aids with concentration. The easiest approach to block out disturbing sounds is to pair this with noise-cancelling earphones.
  • Put your phone in Do Not Disturb mode. There is a notification mute option on every smartphone. You can concentrate on your job by turning on this mode. Don’t let a new text message or social media notification distract you.
  • Disable desktop notifications. As with the last suggestion, turning off desktop alerts is a terrific method to sharpen your attention. The majority of messaging apps include the ability to momentarily disable notifications.
  • Block websites that are distracting. Do you frequently find yourself hopping between websites and social media while working? Avoid giving in to the urge and block these websites with browser extensions. I recommend using apps like StayFocusd or Forest to stay off distracting websites.

3. Maintain a daily routine

productivity

If you struggle to finish assignments on time, consider creating a schedule. It is critical that you get adequate rest and downtime to prevent work and stress from taking over your life. Commence at the beginning: what time would you like to wake up? What time do you intend to sleep? How much time do you think you should give yourself to prepare before settling in front of the computer?

Consider these issues and create a self-centered planned schedule.

Proceed to daily schedules after that. Like me, a lot of remote workers use notebooks that resemble bullet journals. This is helpful since it allows you to make a to-do list each morning when you sit down. A lot of people who work remotely find the Pomodoro technique helpful for their productivity.

4. Make contact with your colleagues.

productivity

The absence of social connection is something that is frequently brought up as a drawback of working remotely.

Sadly, a lot of remote workers are unable to do this, especially now that the COVID-19 pandemic has struck. Most individuals long for the bygone era of office life. In-person interactions, socializing during breaks, brainstorming during meetings, and so forth. After work, a lot of people merely want to unwind with their coworkers at a cafe or pub. Unfortunately, many distant workers are unable to accomplish this, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, this does not mean that you are completely cut off from your colleagues. With tools like Microsoft Teams, creating an environment that takes the place of a lack of human interaction is easy. Make video calls, start chat rooms, and do a lot more.

5. Take frequent pauses.

productivity

Burnout is a big problem in many kinds of jobs. Thankfully, working from home gives you more freedom, so you might just avoid it. Make sure your daily routine includes regular breaks to ensure you can stay focused while working.

“I like to take quick breaks during the day to accomplish productive activities like feeding my pets, taking care of my plants, answering texts, and quickly eating a snack. When I go back to my computer, these activities help me focus again,” says one of our remote workers.

You can plan ahead for your breaks to:

  • You should simulate the breaks you would take if you were working at an office.
  • Take time to pamper yourself while you have work commitments.
  • Make time for each other and observe the breaks taken by other family members.

6. Pay attention to your health

productivity

You may maintain your health when you are at home by working out for even thirty minutes. Exercise produces endorphins into your body, which not only improves your physical look but also uplifts your mood.

There are many different hobbies you can do at home. Engaging in indoor cycling, weightlifting, or following an online workout video can help you maintain your health and fitness.

Another thing to think about is your diet. Make sure your food intake meets the healthy recommended quantities to ensure you have enough energy to get through the day.

7. Log off

productivity

Almost as important as how you start the day is how you end it. After completing a task, know when to log off and shift your brain from work mode. This is your moment to relax and unwind; turn on the TV, turn off your computer, and spend time with the people you care about.

You can ensure that, after a taxing workweek, you feel satisfied and can recuperate for tomorrow by taking this action. Prepare a brief phrase that you will repeat to yourself at the end of your work shift to help your brain understand that your shift is coming to a close. Though you can be as creative as you desire, a simple statement like “I am done with work” will accomplish the trick.
