Step 2: Connect Your USB Drive

Note: In the latest version of Rufus (3.5), there’s now an option to download the ISO image for Windows 8.1 or 10 directly through Rufus, if you don’t already have a copy saved. Just click on the drop-down arrow next to the Select button and choose 

Download instead. This will open a dialogue box where you can choose which Windows version you want to download.

Step 6: Configure Partition Scheme and File System

Select the desired partition scheme and file system. The recommended settings are often preselected, but it’s crucial to choose the configuration that aligns with your system requirements.   

Note: if the USB you’re using isn’t large enough, you’ll get an error message you letting you know. In this case, you’ll need to start again with a different larger USB.

Step 7: Start the Process

Once you’ve configured all the settings, click on the “Start” button. Rufus will display a warning about data loss, confirming that you want to proceed. Click “OK” to begin the process.

Step 8: Wait for Completion

Rufus will now start creating the bootable USB drive. The time it takes to complete the process depends on various factors, including the speed of your USB drive and the size of the bootable image.

Step 9: Successful Completion

Once the process is complete, Rufus will display a “READY” status. Your USB drive is now ready to be used as a bootable device.

Step 10: Safely Eject the USB Drive

Before removing the USB drive from your computer, ensure that Rufus has completed the process successfully. Safely eject the USB drive to avoid any potential data corruption.
