You probably working on something, and you notice that your battery is getting low. You plugged in the charger, and continue on your work, and then it shuts off without saving your work.

You started to freak out because of the effort, and the time you have put in has just been wasted. Then you found out that your laptop is not charging. Frustrating, right?

When you notice that your battery level is on 20% or below it’s time to plug in your charger. But what if it’s not charging or nothing happens?  What will you do? Will you fret out and panic again? Well, in this article let’s take a look at what you can do when your laptop’s charger is plugged in but not charging.

Here Are 5 Methods To Fix This Laptop Battery Charging Problem

1. Double Check the Physical Cable Connection

Before you do the deep troubleshooting, make sure you plugged in the charger on your laptop. This can happen if you are in a hurry and so many things on your mind. Then double-check the outlet if it’s turned on or off and consider trying another outlet in case the other one you are using is not working.

Check also if the cable plugs into the AC adapter brick. This could lose or someone plays or tripped over it.

2.  Remove Your Laptop Battery

To check if your laptop has a battery problem, remove the battery from your laptop located at the back of your laptop or on the bottom part (this is applicable for those laptops that have a removable battery). You should shut down your computer first before removing the battery.

After the battery is taken out from your laptop, press and hold the power button for around 15 seconds. This will drain the remaining power from your laptop. Then plug in the laptop’s charger and try to turn the device on.

If it works properly it means your power cable is good and therefore the problem lies with your battery. Plug the battery back in and make sure all the contacts are lined up. If the problem continues, you might have a dead battery that you’ll need to replace.

You can also try removing the battery yourself if your laptop doesn’t have a removable battery by opening up the device and take it out. However, doing this will most likely void your warranty and if you are not familiar on how to do it, this may cause more damage, and we don’t want that to happen. t’s best to take your device to an experienced technician who can help you out in solving your computer’s issue.

For Mac users, you can apply this solution, too. But again if it doesn’t give you an option to remove it yourself, better seek help.

3.  Updating Your Drivers in the Device Manager

While your battery is removed.

Step 1: Go to Control Panel by clicking on the Home Button below located at the lower left of your screen or just type control panel.

Step 2: Go to Device Manager and select Batteries by double-clicking it. You’ll see the 2 drivers so right-click on it and click Uninstall the device. Now your laptop battery driver has been removed and you’ll notice that the battery icon also disappears from the bottom right of the screen. This will also work for laptops with non-removable batteries.

After uninstalling the drivers, turn off your computer and put back your battery, plug in the charger, and turn it on again. This should be working now. Charged until it becomes 100% full, take out your power cable and leave it until it comes down to 0% and plugged the charger again, repeat this process 2-3 times.

4.  Update or Reset your BIOS 

If the Methods above are still not working try updating and resetting your BIOS. In order to update your BIOS you need to note down your laptop’s serial number. The serial number is assigned only to one particular device and it should be found on the backside of your laptop. It is usually attached and printed there but if it’s wiped out you can still get your device serial number by using the cmd commands.

To pull out your serial number using cmd command, open up cmd and put the following command

wmic bios get serialnumber

Then hit Enter then copy your serial number. Open up your browser and go to your laptop’s manufacturer official website from there you can download the software to update the bios settings of your laptop. Once you are on the official website make sure you are in Software and

Drivers choose the device you are using, in this case, we are troubleshooting the laptop and it will ask you the serial number paste the one you’ve copied earlier. Then it will detect your laptop automatically.

Then it will give you a lot of driver updates available but this time we will select the BIOS and click on download and start installing the update. Make sure not to turn off your computer in installing the update. It will now update the system BIOS automatically.

If updating your BIOS did not fix the problem, then restore the BIOS to its default settings. To do it, turn off your laptop and make sure it is completely shutdown. Turn it on again and press F10 continuously. When you are already on the BIOS page press F9 select Yes by using the keyboard’s arrow keys and hit Enter. Then press F10 to Save and Exit. Then your computer will restart automatically then your problem should be fixed.

5.  Try Another Charger And Consider A Replacement

If you have a friend who has the same laptop, plug it and see if this works. If it does consider buy an official charger as possible. Buying third-party parts could possibly cause damage to your computer and compromise the quality standards you should first have.
